You Are Not What They Say You Are..Or Are You?
Though out history, people have been bound by narratives they never wrote. Outsiders dictate who you must be, what you should believe, where you belong. But identity is not a passive state, it’s a revolution of self definition.
So, here’s your challenge: for one day, set aside the voices of others. Ignore the labels, the whispered judgments, the well meaning yet misguided assumptions. Ask yourself who am I without them? The answer may surprise you.

From childhood, we are subtly conditioned to seek validation. Approval brings acceptance. Praise feels like love. Criticism can feel like rejection. Over time, the voices of other parents, teachers, peers, society merge with our own internal dialogue, shaping how we see ourselves.
But here is the paradox: Identity is not meant to be borrowed. It is meant to be, BUILT !!!
Why Do We Absorb External Opinions?
Mirror Theory: We often define ourselves based on how others react to us. We become reflections of external expectations, rather than our own authentic selves.
The Brain’s Survival Instinct: Humans are wired for social connection. In ancient times, acceptance by the group meant survival. That instinct still lingers, making us hyper aware of how we are perceived.
The Influence of Authority: Parents, mentors, and social structures shape our self perception before we fully develop the ability to question them.
How can we break free?
- Question the Narrative: Ask yourself, “Whose voice am I listening to? Is this truly my belief, or have I absorbed it from others?”
- Cultivate self awareness: Spend time alone with your thoughts, journaling, meditation, or deep self- reflection helps separate external expectations from personal truth.
- Find your inner compass: Rather than relying on validation from others, focus on what feels right for you. Make choices rooted in your own values, not external approval.
- Embrace the power of “NO”: Rejection of imposed identities is an act of self-liberation. Say not to roles, labels and limitations that don’t serve your true essence.
