Sit With Yourself
How often do you truly feel your breath?
How often do you sit alone, stare into space, and notice where your mind wanders? What emotions rise when silence surrounds you?
Many of us, when alone, share our thoughts and emotions with invisible companions — family, friends, colleagues, partners. And often, we whisper: “It’s not fair.”
But here’s the truth: fairness is not always found in others. Sometimes, it begins with us.

Why Do We Expect Fairness From the World?
We live in a culture where fairness is measured by how others treat us. Overworked, ignored, unappreciated — we carry these wounds and wait for someone else to heal them.
But why do we expect fairness from the world, when we rarely offer it to ourselves?
When was the last time you sat still, listened to your breath, and gave compassion to your own heart?

A Moment of Reflection
Just the other day, I sat on my deck, listening to the water fountain and the birds. As I sipped my coffee, sadness welled up. A tear rolled down my cheek as I realized Ramadan was arriving without my parents.
Though I was surrounded by love — my husband, children, Torti the tortoise, and Dua the cat — I felt empty. I missed home. The home of my childhood, with my mother, father, grandmother, sisters, and brothers. I allowed myself to feel it. To accept that I was raised in another generation — one where love was all or nothing, loyalty was sacred, and family bonds endured despite drama and arguments.
In that moment, I found myself sitting beside my mother’s grave. The pain softened into comfort. The sadness became calm. I felt home again.

The Lesson of Fairness
When we search for fairness, we are often searching outside ourselves. But the truth is:
We are the very fairness we seek.
Fairness is not about how others treat us. It is about how we treat ourselves — with patience, compassion, and honesty.

Takeaway for Readers
This Ramadan, sit with yourself.

  • Feel your breath.
  • Listen to your inner voice.
  • Allow your emotions to rise without judgment.
  • Offer yourself the fairness you crave from others.
Because when you are fair to yourself, the world feels lighter, and your relationships become more authentic.
