Another Read about Mental Health: By Naazi Morad.

In a country where unemployment remains a daily reality for millions, it may seem ungrateful—even taboo—to admit that your job is breaking you. But what if I told you that nearly 60% of South African employees wish they could quit their jobs due to emotional strain? That over half of the workforce is battling mental health challenges like depression, anxiety, and burnout?

This isn’t just a statistic. It’s a mirror.

🧠 The Psychology Behind the Smile

We live in a world that rewards performance over presence. In the workplace, emotional dissonance—the gap between how we feel and how we’re expected to appear—is a silent epidemic. We smile through exhaustion. We nod through panic. We show up, even when our nervous systems are screaming for rest.

This chronic suppression of emotion, known in psychology as surface acting, is a key contributor to occupational burnout. It’s not just about long hours—it’s about the emotional labor of pretending to be okay.

👔 The Illusion of “Having It Together”

We often assume that the colleague in the tailored suit or the friend with the curated Instagram feed is thriving. But mental health doesn’t always look like sadness. It can look like overachievement. Like perfectionism. Like the person who never says no.

We judge people by their titles, their tone, their productivity. But beneath the surface, many are navigating high-functioning depression, masked anxiety, or compassion fatigue—especially those in caregiving, education, and leadership roles.

📊 Mental Health in South Africa: The Data Speaks

Recent studies show:

– Nearly half of employees feel unhappy at the start of each workweek.

These aren’t just numbers. They’re neighbors. Colleagues. You. Me.

👁️ When Was the Last Time You Really Looked?

In trauma-informed practice, we speak of attunement—the ability to sense and respond to the emotional states of others. But in a world that moves fast and praises resilience, we often forget to pause.

So I ask you gently:

When was the last time you looked around and truly noticed what others might be carrying?  When did you last ask, “How are you?”—and mean it?

🛑 You Are Not Exempt

If you’ve been pushing through, telling yourself “I should be grateful I even have a job,” while your body whispers otherwise—please know this:

You are not weak. You are not alone. But you are not immune. Avoiding help doesn’t make you stronger. It makes you a statistic.

💬 A Call to Consciousness

Let’s rewrite the narrative. Let’s normalize rest, therapy, boundaries, and emotional honesty. Let’s stop glamorizing burnout and start honoring wellbeing.

If this resonates with you—or if you’re not sure how to begin—reach out. Whether it’s a conversation, a sanctuary session, or simply a space to exhale, you don’t have to carry this alone.

Your healing matters. And it starts with being seen.

With quiet strength
