There are companions, and then there are co-regulators of the soul. Dua, my beloved cat, is the latter. She is not just a pet, she is an intuitive therapeutic presence, a living embodiment of love, and, on many days, the silent co-facilitator in my therapy room.

🧠 Neurochemistry of a Purr

When Dua curls into a lap or gently presses her body against someone in distress, it’s more than comfort it’s neurobiological magic. Research has shown that interacting with a cat can increase oxytocin, the so-called bonding hormone, in both humans and animals. This hormone fosters emotional closeness, trust, and a sense of safety, cornerstones in any therapeutic alliance.

The rhythmic sound of her purring also lowers levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, and stimulates the release of serotonin and dopamine, both vital in mood regulation and emotional well-being. Essentially, a cat’s love isn’t just felt, it’s processed chemically through the body, calming the nervous system and restoring emotional equilibrium.

🫶 Attachment, Empathy, and the Unseen Therapist

Dua doesn’t need words to know when someone is at their emotional edge. She mirrors distress with stillness and often joins sessions unprompted; nestling beside clients when their voices begin to tremble. This is attachment in action: her capacity for attunement reflects a deep, empathic synchrony that many therapists spend years cultivating. She’s what some would call an empathic anchor, a steady, breathing presence that gently regulates emotional dysregulation.

In her gentle companionship, clients experience secure attachment cues: consistent presence, warmth, touch without demand, and acceptance without judgment. That kind of nonverbal containment often allows clients to sit with pain just a little longer… and eventually begin to release it.

🐾 A Companion, Not a Substitute

Many say “a cat is a good replacement for loneliness” – but Dua has taught me something deeper. She is not a surrogate for connection, but rather a facilitator of it. However, like all emotionally sentient beings, she requires care, boundaries, reciprocity, and understanding. She has her moods, her preferences, her need for space, and acknowledging that is part of an ethical, compassionate relationship. In our home, and in my practice, Dua is never “just a cat.” She is a soul with paws, and she calls me mom

💛 The Psychology of Being Seen

To be seen not just observed, is a basic human need. And Dua sees. Her gaze is steady during moments of grief and playful in times of lightness. That capacity to mirror human affect, to intuitively align with others’ emotional landscapes, is what makes her more than a companion. She is, in every sense, a therapeutic force.
