There are moments in life where everything looks “fine” on the outside…
but inside, something feels missing.

You show up.
You do what needs to be done.
You carry your responsibilities.

But there’s a quiet question that lingers:

“What is all of this for?”

In Japanese culture, there is a word for this search—Ikigai.

It means: a reason for being.

Not a grand, overwhelming life purpose.
Not something you need to have all figured out.

Just… a reason to wake up tomorrow.

The Psychology Behind Feeling “Lost”

From a psychological perspective, feeling lost is not a failure.
It’s often a signal.

A signal that:

  • You’ve been surviving more than living
  • You’ve been meeting expectations instead of your own needs
  • Parts of you have been ignored for too long

As Viktor Frankl, a psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor, once said:

When we can no longer change our situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.

What he meant was this:
Humans are not only driven by pleasure or success—we are deeply driven by meaning.

And when meaning is missing, we feel it.

🌸 What Ikigai Really Is (And What It Is Not)

You may have seen Ikigai explained as a perfect intersection of:

  • What you love
  • What you are good at
  • What the world needs
  • What you can be paid for

While helpful, this can sometimes feel overwhelming.

Because what if you don’t know the answers yet?

The truth is:
Ikigai is not something you “find” overnight. It is something you slowly build through:

  • Small moments of joy
  • Meaningful connections
  • Feeling useful, even in simple ways

Start Small: The Power of Everyday Meaning

Not everyone begins with a clear life purpose.
And that’s okay.

In therapy, we often begin with something much smaller:

  • A quiet cup of tea in the morning
  • A moment of laughter with your child
  • Helping one person feel seen
  • Completing a task you’ve been avoiding

These are not insignificant. They are the beginning of your Ikigai.

Because meaning is not always loud.
Sometimes, it is found in the soft, ordinary moments that remind you:

“I am here. And this matters.”

Why This Matters for Your Mental Health

When you begin to reconnect with even small pieces of meaning:

  • Anxiety softens
  • Emptiness begins to shift
  • Motivation slowly returns
  • You feel more like yourself again

This is because you are no longer just existing…
you are connecting to your life.

🤍 You Don’t Have to Figure It Out Alone

If you are feeling lost, stuck, or disconnected—there is nothing “wrong” with you.

You may simply be at a point in your life where your old ways of living no longer fit who you are becoming. And that can feel uncomfortable… but it is also where growth begins.

At Wellness Within Therapy, we create a safe space to explore:

  • Who you are beneath the roles you carry
  • What truly matters to you
  • And how to gently rebuild a life that feels meaningful again

A Gentle Reflection

Before you go, take a moment and ask yourself:

  • What made me feel even slightly alive this week?
  • When did I feel most like myself?
  • What is one small thing I can look forward to tomorrow?

You don’t need all the answers. You just need a starting point.

Your Ikigai is not missing.
It may just be waiting… for you to slow down and notice it.
