A powerful self-reflection on emotional healing, resilience, loss and becoming the person you were meant to be – By Naazi Morad
Years keep moving. The calendar changes. We grow older. Life moves forward.
But sometimes, we don’t.
A part of us remains trapped in a particular year, a relationship, a betrayal, a job we lost, a financial crisis, a painful goodbye, or a version of ourselves we can no longer return to.
And perhaps the hardest question we can ask ourselves is:
“Am I living in what happened to me, or am I learning from what happened to me?”
Life can be incredibly unpredictable. We lose relationships we thought would last forever. We lose jobs that gave us identity and financial security. We lose money, homes, cars and opportunities. We experience betrayal. We experience rejection. And sometimes, we experience the devastating loss of someone we love through death. These experiences can leave emotional wounds that don’t simply disappear because time passes.
But time passing and healing are not the same thing.
WHEN LIFE SETS YOU BACK
A setback can change the way we see ourselves. A relationship ending may make us question our worth. Losing employment may make us question our purpose. Financial hardship can create fear and shame. Betrayal can damage our ability to trust. Grief can leave an emptiness that words cannot easily explain. Trauma can change the way we interpret situations and respond to the world around us.
This is why emotional healing matters.
Because when pain remains unprocessed, we can begin carrying yesterday into today. We react to today’s situation through yesterday’s wound. We distrust someone who hasn’t hurt us because someone else did. We expect rejection before anyone has rejected us. We become defensive before anyone has attacked us. We push people away because we are afraid they will leave. We sabotage opportunities because failure feels safer than trying again.
And without realising it, our past begins writing our present.
BUT WHAT DOES HURT TEACH US?
Pain can teach us things comfort never could. It can build emotional muscle. It can teach resilience. It can teach boundaries. It can teach self-awareness. It can teach us what we will no longer tolerate. It can teach us what truly matters. It can teach us that our identity is bigger than a relationship, a job, a bank balance, a possession or another person’s opinion of us.
Your pain does not have to become your prison. It can become part of your wisdom. That does not mean pretending the pain didn’t hurt. It does not mean rushing grief. It does not mean forgiving people before you are ready.
And it certainly does not mean saying, “Everything happens for a reason.”
Sometimes terrible things happen. Sometimes people hurt us. Sometimes life is unfair. But eventually we have to ask: “What am I going to do with what happened to me?”
STOP LIVING IN “WHAT WAS”
There is a powerful difference between remembering your past and living inside your past. Your past can be a teacher. It should not have permanent ownership of your future. If your thoughts constantly begin with:
“If only…”
“I should have…”
“Why did they…”
“Why did this happen to me?”
“Things were better before…”
you may be spending more emotional energy looking backwards than building forwards. Try changing the question.
Instead of:
“Why did this happen to me?” ask: “What is this teaching me?”
Instead of: “Why did they treat me that way?” ask: “What boundaries do I need going forward?”
Instead of: “Why did I lose everything?” ask: “What can I rebuild from here?”
Instead of: “I will never be the same.” ask: “Who can I become because I survived this?”
That is where personal growth begins.
YOU CANNOT CHANGE EVERYONE AROUND YOU
One of the most exhausting things we can do is spend our lives trying to change other people. We want them to apologise. We want them to understand. We want them to behave differently. We want them to see what they did to us. We want them to become the person we need them to be. But sometimes our greatest breakthrough comes when we realise:
“I cannot control everyone around me. But I can work on myself.”
The issue isn’t always the world. Sometimes it is how we perceive the world. Our experiences, beliefs, fears, attachment patterns and previous wounds can influence how we interpret other people’s behaviour.
Self-reflection allows us to pause and ask: “Is this situation happening now—or am I responding to something that happened then?” That question alone can create a powerful shift in emotional awareness.
WHY ARE SO MANY PEOPLE STUCK IN A CERTAIN YEAR?
Because the body may have moved forward while the heart is still processing what happened. Because the grief was never acknowledged. Because the betrayal was never understood. Because the anger became part of their identity.
Because they never received closure. Because they are still waiting for someone else to give them permission to move on. Because starting again feels frightening. Or because they have confused moving forward with forgetting.
You don’t have to forget. You don’t have to erase your story. You don’t have to pretend it didn’t happen. Healing means you can remember without allowing the memory to control your life.
THE FINAL QUARTER OF 2027: WHAT ARE YOU FOCUSING ON?
As we approach the final quarter of 2027, perhaps this is the perfect time for a personal reset. Not a resolution. Not another promise that everything will magically change. A self-reflection.
Ask yourself:
What am I carrying that I no longer need? What relationship am I still emotionally attached to? What pain am I repeatedly revisiting? What belief about myself needs to change? What am I still trying to prove? Who am I trying to change? What boundaries do I need? What have my difficult experiences taught me? What part of myself have I neglected?
And most importantly:
WHO AM I BECOMING?
Because the goal isn’t simply to survive another year. The goal is to become more emotionally aware, more resilient, more grounded and more intentional about the life you are creating.
YOUR FUTURE DESERVES YOUR ATTENTION
You cannot change what happened. You cannot go back and rewrite the conversation. You cannot undo the betrayal. You cannot bring back yesterday. You cannot force someone to love you differently. You cannot recover every opportunity you lost.
But you can choose what you do next. And sometimes that choice is the beginning of emotional healing. Maybe your next chapter isn’t about getting back what you lost. Maybe it is about discovering who you are without it. Maybe your heartbreak is teaching you boundaries. Maybe your loss is teaching you gratitude. Maybe your failure is teaching you resilience. Maybe your loneliness is teaching you self-worth.
Your past deserves to be acknowledged.
Your pain deserves to be processed.
Your healing deserves attention.
But your future deserves to be lived.**
