WHO ARE YOU REALLY?

Wellness Within Therapy | WWT

Have you ever wondered how you ended up in a situation you promised yourself you would never be in?

A conversation turns into an argument. You say things you regret, agree when you want to say no, or make decisions in the heat of the moment that leave you with disappointment and pain. But have you ever stopped to ask yourself why you do what you do?

Our values, intentions, and beliefs quietly shape how we think, speak, behave, and relate to others. You may value honesty, respect, loyalty, and kindness, but do your choices reflect those values when you feel hurt, rejected, or challenged? Perhaps you believe that saying no makes you selfish, that disagreement means rejection, or that keeping everyone happy makes you a good person. Without realising it, these beliefs can influence your decisions and cause you to move away from who you truly want to be.

Sometimes, we speak without hearing ourselves, react without reflecting, and make decisions without understanding what is driving them. We may think we are protecting a relationship, avoiding conflict, or doing the right thing, when deep down, we are acting out of fear, guilt, or a need for approval. This is not necessarily self-sabotage; sometimes, it is simply a lack of awareness of the patterns we have learnt to live by.

Your name may be Naazi, Paula, John, or Michael. You may be a spouse, parent, professional, or friend. But knowing your name and your roles is not the same as knowing yourself. Who are you beneath the expectations and responsibilities you carry? What do you stand for when life becomes uncomfortable? And do your choices reflect the person you believe yourself to be?

Before your next response, decision, or difficult conversation, pause and ask yourself: Is what I am about to do aligned with my values, influenced by my beliefs, or driven by my fear?

You cannot always control what happens around you, but you can learn to become more conscious of what happens within you. Sometimes, the journey back to yourself begins with one honest question: Am I living according to who I truly am, or who I have learnt to be?
